When somebody searches for “pharmacy near me”, what appears on the map is not picked by luck. Three criteria decide it, and two of them are in your hands.
The map comes from the profile
There is no separate registration for Maps: what feeds the map is the Google Business Profile. Without a verified profile, you are not on the map.
Proximity
Where the person searching is standing. It is the only criterion you do not control — and it is why there is no such thing as “first place on the map”: the result changes as the person moves.
Relevance
Whether your category and description match what the person looked for. Choosing the right category is the single most important decision in the whole profile. Too generic a category makes you appear in the wrong search and disappear from the right one.
Reputation
The number, the rating and the recency of your reviews. A review from two years ago weighs less than one from last week.
What helps in practice
- the exact primary category, and secondary ones only when they genuinely apply;
- steady reviews rather than bursts — twenty reviews on the same day draw attention for the wrong reason;
- photos added with some regularity;
- the same name, address and phone number everywhere your business appears. Conflicting information confuses, and it drags you down.
Beyond the map
The map serves whoever is searching nearby. Whoever looks for your product without naming a place lands in the ordinary results, and there what counts is the website.
