A small business does not have the problem of choosing among many promotion options. It has the opposite problem: no time, no money, and a pile of advice that assumes both. This is the order that pays best per hour spent.
1. A Google Business Profile, today
It takes twenty minutes, costs nothing and shows up fastest. Fill everything in: opening hours, phone, real photos, the area you cover. An incomplete profile shows up less than a complete one.
2. Fix your page titles
The title of each page is the line that appears in the search result, and it is one of the strongest factors in who appears for which search. If your page is called “Home” or “Our services”, it speaks to nobody. Replace it with what people type: “Birthday cakes in Brighton”, “Bookkeeper for small firms in Cork”.
It is free, it takes an afternoon, and it is the highest-return change there is.
3. Ask buyers for reviews
Reviews weigh on who appears first in local search, and they convince the person who is still hesitating. Ask every satisfied customer on the day of delivery, with the link ready.
4. List the business in the search sites of your field
This is the stage that takes longest by hand — and the one that keeps working afterwards, because every listing leaves a link pointing at you.
5. Paid advertising: last
Not because it is bad, but because advertising amplifies what already exists. Advertising before fixing your titles and listings means paying for visits that land on a page that does not convince.
What not to do
Buying followers, buying cheap links in bulk, and pasting your address into other people’s comment sections. All three promise a shortcut, and all three charge dearly later — in reputation and in penalties.
