Showing up in search without paying is possible, and it is the most stable channel an affiliate can have: it does not depend on social reach or on a budget. What you cannot do is publish the bare link and expect a position.
Why the raw link does not work
Search engines rank pages, not links. A page that only redirects somewhere else has nothing of its own to offer the person searching, and that is exactly the kind of content search engines learned to filter out.
What works: a page with real content
Three formats pay consistently for an affiliate:
- A comparison — “model A or model B”: it catches the person at the exact moment of the doubt;
- A review from use — what you made of it after using it, including what you did not like;
- An answer to a specific doubt — “does it work for this?”, “will it fit there?”.
In all three, the affiliate link sits inside the content, as a natural consequence.
The title decides it
The page title has to contain exactly what the person types. “2026 review” is not what anybody searches for. “Is the X headset good for the gym?” is.
Make the page findable
Publishing does not notify anyone. The page has to be discovered, and that happens faster when other sites point at it — backlinks. Getting those links by hand is slow, and it is the half that keeps paying.
Mind the programme rules
Some programmes require you to disclose that the link is an affiliate link. Doing it does not hurt your position, and it avoids trouble with the programme and with the reader.
