What are backlinks and how do they work

Backlinks are links other websites place pointing to yours. They work like a recommendation: the more relevant sites point to you, the more search engines understand your site deserves to appear. It is one of the oldest and most stable criteria in search.

Backlink is a technical word for a simple idea: another website placed a link pointing to yours. If a cooking blog mentions your kitchenware shop, that link is a backlink of yours.

Why it matters so much

Search engines have to choose between thousands of pages about the same thing. One of the most reliable ways to measure reputation is to look at who cites whom — the same logic as academia, where the most cited work is the most respected.

This criterion has existed since Google began and remains one of the strongest, because it is hard to fake convincingly.

It is not quantity. Three things weigh:

  • Topic match: a link from a site in your field is worth far more than one from a site about anything else;
  • Reputation of who links: a respected site passes along more;
  • Naturalness: a link inside a text that makes sense is worth more than a loose link in a footer.

What does not count

Packages offering "a thousand backlinks for ten dollars" exist and are always the same thing: bulk links on sites with no relation to yours, created only to sell links. Search engines have recognised that pattern for over a decade. At best those links are ignored. At worst the site is demoted.

  • directories and search sites in your field;
  • partners, suppliers, customers and associations;
  • content other people actually want to cite;
  • presence in local and regional directories.

All of them work, and all of them are slow when done one by one. That is the work Backlia organises: your listing is published across a network of search sites, each one carrying a link to your address, inside content related to what you do.

It does not fix a bad page. If your title does not speak to what the person is looking for, no amount of links solves it. A link is the tie-breaker between similar pages — not a substitute for the page being right.
